Lady Wolverines come up short
Comments 0 | Recommend 0PORTALES — The first-year Texico girls golf team came up a bit short in its bid to qualify for Class 1-3A state competition next week, finishing second in Monday’s District 3 tournament at Portales Country Club.
The Lady Wolverines shot a team score of 399, 14 strokes behind Lovington. Portales, the only other full team in the event, finished at 448.
Only the top team and top individual on Monday qualified for state, scheduled for next week in Las Cruces.
Clovis Christian junior Lauren Douma, who had already qualified for state by earning three legs during the season, finished in a tie for third with Texico freshman Erin Scanlan, each shooting 49-47 — 96. Douma was CCS' lone representative in the tourney.
Rounding out Lady Wolverines tallies were sophomore Shannon Van Matre at 101, junior Kristen Beltran at 105 and soplhomore Dionna McWhorter at 106, all season-best scores.
Lovington's Lisa Bartlett was the individual champion with a 92.
“Breaking 400 is pretty big for a first-year program,” Texico coach Keith Durham said. “I was pretty pleased with the girls.”
