Lady Cats down Taos to finish seventh in meet

ARTESIA — The Clovis High Lady Wildcats scored three second-half goals Saturday to beat Taos 4-2 in the seventh-place match of a season-opening girls soccer invitational hosted by Artesia High School.

Earlier on Saturday, the Lady Wildcats lost to Bosque 5-1.

Airen Martin had two second-half goals and assisted on a first-half tally by Taisha Bosque for the Lady Cats against Taos. Martin put Clovis ahead by knocking in a rebound early in the second half, then took a pass from Melaya Flores and converted for the match’s final goal.

Audrey Rodella’s goal, assisted by Bosque, put CHS up 3-1 before the Lady Tigers countered to pull within one.

“We kind of figured out a few things,” Lady Cats coach Shane Leatherwood said. “It took a while for the girls to relax and play their game.”

Martin also put the Lady Cats on the board in the second half against Bosque, converting a feed from Foster.

Leatherwood, whose team dropped its first-round match to Moriarty 8-0 on Friday, said the Lady Cats didn’t play that badly on defense against the Bobcats, despite the score.

“It’s just one of those things where (the ball) just got through (to the net),” he said. “We played a lot better than (the score). We easily could have just given up.”

Clovis returns to action next weekend with another Friday-Saturday tournament, this one to be hosted by Roswell Goddard.
