GALLUP — The North built a 20-point lead in the second half and held on to beat the South 66-54 Saturday night in the New Mexico High School Coaches Association’s Class 1A-2A all-star basketball game at Gallup High School.

North Pine’s D.J. Yazzie scored 18 points en route to MVP honors for the North, which was coached by Clovis Christian’s Max Kralicek. He said he enjoyed the event.

“We had a good time,” he said. “I was kind of surprised and pleased that they asked me to (coach). We had some great kids to work with.”

The area was represented by three players, all on the South team.

Texico’s Faith Martin was the only South player in double figures, finishing with 14 points. Texico’s Bryn Mayfield added eight and Melrose’s Kimberly Lyons did not score.
